Bald Head Island is located five miles off the coast of Southport, NC, and accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat. The ferry ride is about 20 minutes. Island transportation is by electric golf cart. When you arrive on the island, transportation to your accommodations is by tram.
Please note: You cannot make reservations for the ferry. Boarding is on a first come - first served basis. During high check-in times, you should arrive 40 minutes in advance to insure you can get on the ferry. Bald Head Island transportation advises that it is not often that you cannot get on a particular ferry, but it does happen occasionally. If this does happen you simply have to wait for the next ferry. However, you must make reservations for the tram to transport you to your destination. If you are staying at a home, you give the reservationist the address or name of the home. Luggage: You may drop your luggage off at the ferry terminal before parking your car. Deep Point Marina will load your luggage onto the ferry and unload it upon arrival. Please label all luggage. If you are packing additional items such as groceries, make sure they are in sealed containers. A good rule of thumb is to pack like you are flying. Golf clubs should be in your golf bag with a hood. Bicycles, kayaks and other over-sized items should be clearly labeled. See our page: What to Bring > Island Transfers: (Tram Service) Your ferry ticket includes tram service to your accommodations upon arrival, and to the ferry terminal on departure from the island. When paying for your reserved tickets, please tell the attendant the name or address of your accommodations and it will be given to the tram driver on the island. You need to call and reserve tram service the day before your departure date. The tram will pick you up at your accommodations. You should be ready for pick-up by the tram service an hour before your ferry departure time. Island Transportation: Your primary mode of transportation is by golf cart. Golf carts are included with home and room rentals. If you are just taking a day-trip you may rent a golf cart on the island. Call 910-457-4944. Driving: Bald Head Island Resort is at the Southern-most corner of coastal North Carolina. Driving here is easy from the Southern, Eastern and Mid-Atlantic States. Flying: The Wilmington, NC airport (ILM) is a 30 minute drive from Southport. The Myrtle Beach (MYR) airport is an hour drive from Southport, the embarkation point to Bald Head Island. Private planes can use Cape Fear Regional Jetport.
